About the Film
Directed by Jochen Hick and Andreas Strohfeldt
Berlin International Film Festival, Official Selection, Panorama,
“Anyone with an interest in European political and social history, particularly the failed utopia of Soviet Communism, will find rich pickings here.”
—Stephen Dalton, The Hollywood Reporter
“The wholesale persecution of gays and lesbians under communism is exposed in Out in East Berlin….It shows how they were systematically ostracized by a totalitarian regime which pretended to the outside world that it was tolerant of homosexuality.”
—Tony Paterson, The Independent
“Out in East Berlin—Lesbians & Gays in the GDR adds significantly to what we know about the experiences of lesbians and gay men in the German Democratic Republic. The film illustrates the confusing contradictions embodied by the German socialist state, and should be seen by anyone seeking a deeper understanding of this extinct nation, its historical period, and the lives of queer people under socialism.”
—Dr. Kyle Frackman, Assistant Professor of Germanic Studies, The University of British Columbia
Out in East Berlin—Lesbians & Gays in the GDR tells the impressive-to-absurd personal histories of gay men and lesbians in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), from the dawn of East Germany until the fall of the Berlin Wall. Paragraph 175, which made homosexual behavior punishable by law, was abolished in the GDR in 1968, but gay life in East Germany was still clandestine and complex. Lesbians and gays in the GDR, on the path to an out sexual identity, shared one specific and sinister experience; they lived under the watchful eye of the Ministry of State Security (Stasi), which recorded their actions in the bedroom and in innumerable personal files. Out in East Berlin is a fascinating, character-driven portrait of a nascent LGBT movement growing under the surveillance of a socialist society.
